How to deal with cloth diaper nay-sayers

One of the questions I see from many cloth diapering parents is "what do I do when my friends and family aren't supportive of cloth diapers?"

Well, the truth is, you do nothing. Nothing about their feelings anyway. If you believe that using cloth diapers is what's best for you family then you continue doing it. You don't have to get into debates or arguments. You don't even really have to defend yourself. You keep going and stand by your decision. Don't let their negativity get you down.

This isn't always easy, trust me! I'm a people pleaser. I hate when other people don't think I'm doing something right. When I started cloth diapering, I didn't know anyone that used cloth diapers. There was discussions and bets in my family about how long I would last. They thought I was crazy. People offered to buy us disposable diapers. Despite all of that, my husband and I stood firm that cloth diapers were best for our family. We didn't get in arguments. We just stated facts when the topic came up and were always enthusiastic about our choice. Eventually, I began converting friends and family. They saw how easy it really was! The nay-sayers became interested and jumped on board!

I definitely think you catch more flies with honey! If I had been argumentative, I don't think they would have opened up to using cloth diapers. This isn't going to be true for everyone. I still have friends that wouldn't dream of switching to cloth diapers, but that's okay. We're happy with our choice and they are happy with theirs.

This of course doesn't just apply to cloth diapers. Many of the decisions you make either as a parent or in your life will be met with opposition from others. We're all different. We have different ideas about the best way to raise our children or live life. Ultimately, you are responsible for raising your children the best way possible. If you stand behind your choices and truly believe you are doing what's best, it doesn't matter what others think.
