Today's Featured Fluff Addict is...Kate!

Tell us a little about yourself, where you are located and if you have little ones in cloth diapers?
My name is Kate, I live in beautiful Portland, Oregon. I have two children, Ian ( 24 months) and Sophie ( 4 months) Ian was in cloth diapers for half of his infancy. When he was 13 months old, he learn to unsnap/unvelcro his cloth diapers, so we had to begin using disposables, and duct tape them all around his waist. At 22.5 months old, he began potty training, and we use bummis training pants and disposable night time training pants.

What made you decide to give cloth diapers a try?
I had been doing a lot of research on how to save money with a baby, and one of the first things that I was drawn to was cloth diapering. I liked the economical factor, but at first I was hesitant because of all the overwhelming options. I started out by getting gdiapers from a consignment sale, and started with those and cloth prefolds. Then later,  I had a friend who was wanting to sell a large portion of her stash, so I dove in and bought it.

What were your friends and family's reaction when seeing the "new" cloth diapers and have they been supportive or skeptical of your choice to use cloth diapers?
My in laws and my friends are amazed at how adorable most of my diapers are, and at how easy the fitteds or pockets are to use and to take care of. My mother in law works at a daycare in my husbands home town, and even she said if she showed her boss these diapers, they would be more a more cloth friendly facility! I get a lot of compliments on the colors/prints of the diapers, especially the minky ones :)

The person to whom I was shocked to get support from was my husband. When I started thinking about CDing, I figured I would have to work REALLY hard to convince him. To my chagrin, when I brought up the topic, all I had to say was "affordable and economical" and he was on board. Even the thought of caring and washing them didn't bother him.

What was your very first cloth diaper?
An 8 pack of gdiapers with 20 cloth prefolds that I purchased used at a consignment sale for 15.00.

What type of diapers does your stash primarily consist of; pockets, aio, onesize, prefolds, flats, hybrids, etc.?
I mostly have pockets (18), next is fitteds (12), then AIOs (8) and then a few prefolds and flats.

What is your favorite Knickernappies product or which Knickernappies product are you dying to try and why?
I have yet to try the OS diapers, so I am dying to feed my addiction. But I've also heard awesome things about hemp inserts so I am really wanting to try those out, especially for overnight diapers.

Do you have a favorite place to hang out and talk or learn about cloth ; a blog, message board, facebook page?
Facebook. A LOT of my online mom friends are CD addicts as well. I also chat alot on the cloth diaper thread on www.baby-gaga.com.

What cloth diapering item, besides diapers, do you consider to be a must-have accessory?
Wetbags ( obviously) and bioliners!

If you could share just one tip with someone who is just starting out with cloth or considering using cloth, what would be your best piece of advice to them?
Start out slow, and buy one of each type of diaper ( OS, sized, pockets, fitteds, contours, AIOs, prefolds, etc). Look for sales and reach out to other CD mamas for advice. Join a CD chat before you start buying and check out deals, tips, ask advice, etc. If you want, look for stores that offer a variety trial package so you can find out what kinds you like best. When I first started out, it was overwhelming! But I had a few friends who helped me decipher it all, and I quickly got into a groove. Now, I enjoy laundry and LOVE using cloth diapers.

A BIG thanks to Kate for sharing her cloth diapering story and advice with us!
