Your Guide to Cloth Diapering at Daycare!

Guest post by Dawn Papple of Everything Birth

Tell me if this has happened to you. You go into a really nice daycare. You meet the caregivers. You finally feel comfortable trusting your new baby with this center. Then you ask them if they allow cloth diapers.

They say no.

You get bummed, but it was as you presumed it would be, and so you accept their decision.
Here’s what you have to understand. To most people, cloth diapers are still the old pre-fold diapers with rubber pants and pins and wet-pails.

If you want to use cloth diapers all the time, here’s the effective strategy my clients used to get them to allow cloth in their facility.
  1. Have your diaper bag prepared like a well oiled machine, ready to rival the convenience of any disposable diaper change.
  2. Choose an easy to use diapering system.
  3. Pre-stuff your diapers pockets before you leave your house so that the diaper doesn’t seem overwhelming.
  4. Introduce the topic with these words: “Oh, and let me show you the diapers we use because his skin is very sensitive.” presenting it as more of a necessity than an alternative choice.
  5. Show them the pre-stuffed diaper, and demonstrate very briefly that the closure works the same on cloth as it does on disposables.
  6. Show them the diaper on your child pointing out there is no diaper cover nor diaper pins.
  7. Show them your wipes. Have them pre-bagged and moistened with a mixture of water and wipe solution to mimic disposable diaper wipes.
  8. Bring an example of a wet bag and explain that they are simply to use that in lieu of the garbage pail.
  9. Explain that they are not to empty the poop from the diaper, but rather they should just fold it as they would a disposable and place in the wet bag.

This method has been highly successful with my clients in the past. I’d love to hear your experiences with this method after you try it. I bet you will also be very successful.

Tips on 'Going Greener' for the New Year!

With the New Year come New Years resolutions.  Save more money, lose weight, cook more meals, get out of debt...those are just a few of the most common resolutions made each year when the ball drops and we ring in the new year.

What are your goals and resolutions?  Perhaps trying to go just a little greener this year should be on your list of things to accomplish.

Trying to be a little greener doesn't have to mean that you rush out and invest in pricey solar panels so that you can generate your own electricity, sometimes all you need to do is improve the green things that you already do.

When I was just starting out cloth diapering I didn't have enough cloth diapers to make it through a whole day, but with each cloth diaper I did change I kept in mind that was one less disposable that I was putting into the landfill.  The more cloth you use the better off we all will be.  Baby steps are ok.  Don't be of the philosophy that if you can't do something all the way that you shouldn't try it at all.  Every little bit counts!

What are some other great and easy ways to try and green up some of your everyday choices...

Give cloth wipes a try!  Just like cloth diapers, the more cloth wipes you use, the less disposables you're throwing away.  Too scared to make the switch completely?  Try using cloth wipes when you're at home and save the disposable wipes for when you're out and about.

Recycle more!  Recycling is one of the easiest ways you can green up your lifestyle.  Give it a try!  Almost everything comes in recyclable packaging these days and it's not until you really start to recycle that you realize just how much you've been throwing away that you didn't have to.  Jars, soda cans, soup cans, cereal boxes, toilet paper rolls, food boxes....The list goes on and on.

I was at a family members house over the holidays and noticed they'd begun recycling.  I was thrilled but then I realized that they weren't recycling glass.  Of all the recyclables glass is the easiest in my opinion, so I gave them a bit of a hard time and gave them a little push to maybe start recycling their glass bottles.  So maybe that's all you need, just a little encouragement to try and recycle a little more than you normally do.

Conserve water!  Conserving water can be as easy as taking shorter showers, less baths or simply turning the water on and off while you're brushing your teeth or rinsing your dishes.  Our house is on a well so every time I run the water I also run the well pump, so using less water means using less electricity too.

Switch to cloth mama pads or a menstrual cup!  Step outside of your comfort zone and ditch those disposable pads and tampons.  Try out some of the great reusable options out there!

Use less paper products!  Paper plates and paper towels can be such a waste.  Make your own reusable flannel "un-paper" towels and try making your own snack bags!  You'll be amazed at how much you can save.

Well these are just a few of my ideas on easy and inexpensive ways that you can go green or greener.  The best part, going green helps save money too!

So do you plan on doing anything like these for the new year?

Today's Featured Fluff Addict is...Gina!

Tell us a little about yourself, where you are located, how many kids you have, little ones in cloth, etc.-
I'm Gina! I'm a 43 year old work at home wife/mom.  I live in San Antonio, Texas with my husband of ten years and my 5 month old son.  We have exclusively cloth diapered our son since he was two weeks old.

What made you decide to give cloth diapers a try?
My main reason was to save money.  I wanted to stay home with my son and cloth diapering was one way I could save money on our household budget.  Now, I also like that I'm not contributing to the billions of disposable diapers that go to landfills each year.  And, not having my baby exposed to chemicals from disposable diapers is a wonderful benefit, as well.

What were your friends and family's reaction when seeing the "new" cloth diapers and have they been supportive or skeptical of your choice to use cloth diapers?
My husband was VERY apprehensive but my Mom was supportive.  All three of us went to a cloth diaper class together to see what was entailed to use and maintain modern cloth diapers.  We were all pleasantly surprised how easy it truly is to cloth diaper compared to when my Mom used cloth diapers.  She was absolutely amazed by the ease of pocket diapers!  All our friends who use disposable diapers still think we're crazy!

What was your very first cloth diaper?
Newborn Prefolds and covers that I rented for 2 months from a local WAHM diaper retailer.  After the two months, I bought Infant Indian Cotton Prefolds, 4 covers, and a few pocket diapers to try out, including a Knickernappie One Size Pocket Diaper in Royal Blue.

What type of diapers does your stash primarily consist of; pockets, aio, onesize, prefolds, flats, hybrids, etc.?
Primarily GroVia AI2/Hybrid Shell with Organic Soaker Pads for day use, GroVia BioSoakers for when we are out of the house, and Pocket Diapers for nighttime (bumGenius, Knickernappies, and Happy Heinys).  I'm a bona fide fluff addict so I also have Indian Cotton Prefolds, Fitteds, All-In-Ones, and One Size Diaper Covers in my stash.

What is your favorite Knickernappies product or which Knickernappies product are you dying to try and why?
I have tried several Knickernappie products-One Size Pocket Diaper, Loopy Do insert, Changing Pads, and Nursing Pads.  I love them all but my favorite right now is the Baltic Amber Teething Jewelry which as really helped my son with teething pain.  I'm dying to try a KN pail liner!  I've had some issues with the PUL detaching from my current wet bag and I know first hand that KN's PUL is practically indestructible!

Do you have a favorite place to hang out and talk or learn about cloth ; a blog, message board, facebook page, etc.?
Definitely facebook!  I have my own WAHM FB page dedicated to cloth diapering information, fan/parent interaction, and giveaways- http://www.facebook.com/GinaTurellaGarciaGoBabyGo

What cloth diapering item, besides diapers, do you consider to be a must-have accessory?
I know most moms say a diaper sprayer but since I really haven't needed one yet, I'd say reusable wipes!  I have 36 that are continuously in rotation-I use at least 6-10 each day not only to clean my little one's bum but also to wash his face, clean up spit up, etc.  They are so much more economical than disposable wipes!

If you could share just one tip with someone who is just starting out with cloth or considering using cloth, what would be your best piece of advice to them?
When you buy cloth diapers, be sure to try the diapers on your child BEFORE you wash them!  Even though many diapers have weight ranges or claim to be "One Size", not all diapers fit every baby.  Use a liner, try it on your baby to assess the fit, THEN either wash or return it.  I had to return some one-size pocket diapers sized 8-35 lb. that I bought for my baby because they didn't fit him in the legs, even at 2 months old, weighing 11 1/2 lb.!  Luckily I got back 100% because they had not been used or washed!

Thanks so much Gina, for being a Fan of Knickernappies and for sharing your story!

Outside of my comfort zone never felt so comfortable! Have you tried the Diva Cup?

I'll admit it, I'm a cloth diaper fanatic but I don't use mama cloth.  I love mama cloth and I do promote it but I've always been a tampon using kind of gal and just could never see any reason to use anything else.  From the women I talk to it usually seems that there are either a lot of women who prefer pads or women who never use pads.  I don't recall too many who use a variety of methods.  That's something I will try and teach my daughter early on, there are options and you should try them all in order to find out what you like best.

So not that long ago I was introduced to the concept of the Diva Cup.  I thought it was a little out there and couldn't imagine how it could possibly hold enough.  I mean I have never actually measured just how much a cup would need to hold but the Diva Cup sure looked tiny and I couldn't imagine having to change it and rinse it frequently throughout the day.

Second, I wondered just how comfortable could this little thing be?  So I suppose you could just say I was a skeptic, I thought there's no way it could be as convenient as it sounds.

Then I decided to give it a try.

I ordered a Size 2 and when it arrived I excitedly showed my husband what I was going to try and what it looked like.  He had no idea what I was talking about or what I was showing him.  But I explained and when he heard that it was going to save us money he jumped right on board the Diva train!
So how did I like it?

I read somewhere that it was easiest to insert in the shower so that's where I first tried.  I discovered that for me it was easiest to do while squatting, this could be an issue if I were to be in a public restroom, etc. but it's not to say that I couldn't or that you couldn't use it any other way, that's just the way I prefer.

I was surprised that you really don't place it very far up, when you think that you'd still be able to feel it you actually can't.  I'd say that it would take about one full cycle to get your method down from how to insert it and when you'll need to check it.

Personally, on the first and second day of my cycle I check it/rinse it every six hours, except over night.  After day two I can go 12 hours which is way more convenient than using tampons in my opinion.

I never dreamed that I would like it so much and be a total convert after just one cycle but I was!  Now I tell everyone about it and even by them as gifts for other women in my family just so they'll give it a try too.

So lets crunch some numbers, that's approximately 15 tampons per cycle, 12 cycles a year, since age 13.  That's about 3600 tampons later that I finally tried another option and I'm not going back any time soon.

I love that I no longer have to panic when I start my cycle and realize that I don't have any tampons.  My husband loves that I no longer have to send him to the drugstore on a tampon run.

I'm also very excited to have made another step in the right direction towards reducing our families waste and saving us money as well.  I don't even want to think about my daughter getting old enough to start her period but now I know that I want to show her all the choices available to her.  I hope I can teach her to skip the disposable options all together and go straight to mama cloth and the Diva Cup when she's ready.

Do you use the Diva Cup?  Been thinking of trying it?  We'd love to hear if it worked for you.

If you're thinking of purchasing one, visit one of our fine Knickernappies retailers where you will find that many of them carry it in their stores.

"Fast-paced, trivia-laced, big fun entertainment for the whole brainy family.  The aim of the game is to race to "the brain".  With a flurry of flashing lights and sounds, the 3-D brain randomly chooses one of six categories, then you choose one of three difficulty levels.  Your knowledge, strategy and luck move you around the board in your race to the brain.  Watch out - board events can quickly change the destiny of the game, so it takes more than brains to win.  Great for developing thinking and social skills."

Reduce ~ Reuse Moby Wrap from BabysBottomLine!

The Reduce, Reuse custom screenprinted Chocolate Moby Wrap from BabysBottomLine would make a perfect gift!  Advocate cloth with this cute and comfy baby wrap and when you want to go incognito, simply reverse for a solid chocolate color.

"The design of the Moby® Wrap uses your entire back, as well as your shoulders, to carry the weight of your baby. Unlike other carriers, which have narrow straps or go across one shoulder, the Moby® Wrap is a wide piece of fabric that is wrapped over both shoulders. It is amazingly comfortable and easy to wear. There are no buckles, snaps or other fasteners. It is easy to adjust the fit of your Moby® Wrap by varying how tightly you wrap yourself and your baby."
