Tell us a little about yourself and your family and how you got into the cloth diaper business-I am a working mom of two little ones. Levi Bentley is 2.5 and a cloth diaper graduate. Bianca Blu is 6 months and loves her selection of fluffy diapers. I am married to a wonderful, supportive husband of six years, Paul, who works for the Denver Hospice and happily comes after work to help out at the retail store, where the kids and I spend our days. We live and work in Lakewood, CO ... a Denver suburb. Paul and I went to the same high school, graduated from the University of Colorado before marrying in 2004.

How'd you get started cloth diapering and what made you decide to open you own business? My older son attempted to make his way into the world at 21 weeks, so I spent 16 weeks on complete bedrest. To pass the time, I spent hours each day online learning about natural parenting practices and products. It was during this time that I discovered modern cloth diapers. Inspired to leave the world a better place for our child, we chose to exclusively cloth diaper our soon to be born child and incorporate natural parenting and other eco-responsible lifestyle choices into our home.

After three months back in a downtown corporate position after his arrival, I longed to spend more time with my son. I looked back at the amazing products I discovered on bedrest and decided I wanted to open an online retail store to promote natural parenting products as an easy to use, affordable alternative for the every day suburban soccer mom. Just under two years later, we opened an 1800 square foot retail store front in a busy shopping center just a half mile from our home. At ecoPOLITAN, we have everything you need to keep your family happy and the planet healthy!

What do you like best about being in the cloth diaper industry? As a working mom, I love the fact that so many of the cloth diaper companies are owned and operated by moms. Meeting women who created a product to solve a child's health issue or who decided to take the idea of work-life balance into their own hands, I am continually inspired by other like minded moms who are trying to do the best they can for their family and their planet.

What are your favorite Knickernappies products and why? It's hard to pick a favorite, but I'd have to say the Doorknob Diaper Pail has a special place in our home. Or should I say places?! We have one hanging in both kids room and on the door to our laundry room off the kitchen for towels, bibs and general laundry left around the house. It takes up no space at all and is perfect for laundry or diapers, at home or when we travel!

Cloth Wipes Part 2: When You're Out & About

Are you afraid of using cloth wipes when you're out because you think it will be a hassle? Don't fret, once you get the hang of it it's even more convenient than using disposable wipes!

Many moms find using cloth wipes out and about more challenging. I think this is due to carrying moistened wipes and trying to stock fresh wipes before each outing. It’s either that or finding yourself with a dirty baby and musty smelling wipes. Yuck!

My solution is to keep a small wet bag (or cosmetic bag or any small bag) in your diaper bag. Stock it with 8-10 dry wipes and a small squirt bottle or spray bottle of wipe solution or water. Then, moisten wipes as needed. Wet or dirty wipes go in to a bigger wet bag with your dirty diapers to be washed at home. Dry wipes go back into the small bag. Note: Planet Wise now makes a set that contains 10 wipes inside a wet bag...it's perfect!

This method makes using cloth wipes out & about much easier. The only catch is to remember to restock with dry wipes occasionally, which you’d have to do with disposable wipes

What's so convenient about it? Well when using disposables you have to place your dirty diapers into a wetbag for transport home and then you're left with soiled disposable wipes that you'll either have to carry around in a separate bag or find somewhere to dispose of them. With cloth you simply place the soiled wipes in your wetbag with your diapers and wash them all together! It's super convenient and makes diaper changes in public much easier.

How was the overall review of product, fit, features, ease of use, how you like this product compared to other brands? My baby, Faye was 10 month old when she first time used KND, she has a Spring Green one, nice colour. The first night we used it..it worked great, no leaks anymore and of course my Faye was still dry and in comfort until the morning..even with just using 1 LoopyDo insert. But maybe for the older baby,they need 2insert for night, first I try to use 2 LoopyDo inserts but it seem too thick and uncomfortable.. So now I decide to use 1 LoopyDo plus 1 microfiber insert for night.

Compared with other brands, I like the size of KN, it's really flexible and adjustable,and I think I even can use until 3years old children (depend the weight). KN have a simple design and the high quality snap work great that makes it easy to use.

What's your favorite feature? LoopyDo Inserts that prevent leaks. I never found an insert like this before!

Would you recommend this product to others? Of course, I've recommended KN to my friend and she has one KN now.. :) and I'll recommend KN to more friends.. But FYI..it is still too expensive for us in Indonesia to have this KND :( it takes about US $30.. some of my friends objected to having KN because of the price.

Cloth Wipes Part 1: Using Cloth Wipes while at home!

With the passing of Earth Day it's a perfect time to pick up a new green habit. If you're not already using cloth wipes with your cloth diapers then you should make the resolution to switch! I'm often asked about using cloth wipes so I've written a comprehensive article all about wipes. It'll be a three-part series, so stay tuned for the next two segments.

Part One: AT HOME

Keep 5-6 wet cloth wipes in a plastic container at your changing station. I use an old disposable wipes container, but anything will work fine. I like having the wipes almost dripping, but not actually have standing water in the container. You can moisten the wipes with either a Wipe Solution or plain water.

Keeping just a few wet at a time ensures you’ll use all of the wipes before they turn musty. No matter how natural disposable wipes claim to be, they always have a preservative; they have to or they’d be really stinky once we buy them! Cloth wipes do not have any chemicals whatsoever, making them great for baby’s skin but they last only a day or two with plain water, and just 3-4 days with a wipe solution, before they start to smell funny.

On a nearby shelf, within arm’s reach, keep a stack of dry wipes. Next to it, have a bottle of wipe solution or water handy. This way, you can easily moisten more wipes to be ready for the next diaper change. Or, if you have a really nasty diaper and you use all of your pre-moistened wipes, you can wet more right away without leaving your baby’s side.

Dirty wipes can go into the diaper pail with cloth diapers and be washed right along with diapers. If you don’t use cloth diapers, you can wash your cloth wipes with towels, baby clothing, etc.

Guess who this week's Featured Retailer is? It's Teresa of Squishy Tushy! Squishy Tushy is a modern cloth diaper boutique and also local diaper service. They are located in SE Michigan, 15 minutes from Toledo, Ohio and 30 minutes from Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Tell us a little about yourself and your family and how you got into the cloth diaper business-I created Squishy Tushy to share my love of cloth diapers with the rest of the world. Here's my story and experiences with the diapers that changed my life!

Before my oldest was even born I decided I wanted to use cloth diapers. I went to a department store bought Gerber prefolds and those little Gerber plastic pants (yuck!). I was so excited, everyone told me I was crazy but I was determined to use cloth. My first sweet pea was born and I used cloth for a few months, then I started having trouble, leaking, messes everywhere. I decided cloth must just not be for me and started using disposables.

My second sweet pea was born and she got a HORRIBLE bleeding rash on her bottom. I took her to several doctors and no one could tell me what it was from or how to stop it. She would scream when I would change her diaper and the tears would just roll down both of our eyes. I tried different kinds of disposables and nothing helped, prescription upon prescription and still she had an extremely sore, bloody bottom. So I decided I had no choice but to use cloth diapers again. That is when I discovered the WONDERFUL world of cloth! I bought some pocket diapers and within 3 days her bottom was free of any rashes, her and I were both happy again. One of my favorite diapers for my babies was a Knickernappies Pocket, they were our jeans diapers!

What do you like best about being in the cloth diaper industry?
I love my job, not everyone can say that, but I truly do. I love to help other moms with all the questions and help trouble shoot any cloth diapering problems.

What are your favorite Knickernappies products and why? I love the Sized Pocket Diaper-they are so trim and super adjustable. I wish my babies were still in diapers, I know the one size would really be a hit at my house. SuperDo's and LoopyDo's are some of my other favorites, they are a great insert when you just need a little or sometimes a lot more absorbency!

The Ultimate Showdown - Snaps vs. Velcro: Is one better than the other?

Cloth diapering can be very overwhelming, that we know for sure! And just one of the things that can cause your head to spin is whether or not to choose a snap closure system or a velcro system. What makes one better than the other and is one clearly better than the other? In this Blog post Snaps and Velcro will go head to head and we'll let you decide which you think is the better option.

First things first...

What in the world is Aplix and where does it fit in this conversation? Aplix, Touchtape and Velcro are pretty much all in the same family. Aplix and Velcro have a stronger hold than Touchtape but all three are "hook and loop" type closures. In this discussion we'll just use the term "velcro."

Let's list the pro's and con's of both Snaps and Velcro. In the RED corner we'll have Velcro and in the BLUE we'll have Snaps!

Pro's of Velcro:

• Provides a very adjustable and customizable fit.
• Very easy to use. Good for babysitters and daddy's, anyone whom you don't want to overwhelm or that you think might get confused by snaps.
  

Con's of Velcro:

• Can be noisy which interests babies and easily becomes something they want to mess with. Leads to an interest in taking their diapers off.
• Depending on how often you wash, velcro does wear out over time and may need to be replaced.
• Can collect a lot of lint which can affect it's strength.
• If not secured properly in the wash and dry cycle velcro can attach to other diapers and cause damage as well as become a lint magnet.
• When it comes into contact with the babies skin it can cause irritations and scratches making baby uncomfortable.
• Babies can undo velcro closures more easily than snaps.

Pro's of Snaps:

• Much more durable than Velcro and can last the life of a diaper.
• Much more quiet than Velcro.
• No risk of damaging other diapers in the laundry.
• Will not collect lint.
• Not abrasive and will not scratch the babies skin like velcro.
• Babies are less likely to take off their own diapers.

Con's of Snaps:

• Limited number of snaps/settings make them a bit less adjustable than Velcro.
• Not as easy to use as velcro. Could be a learning curve for newbies and caregivers.
• Harder to replace a broken snap than to replace worn out velcro, although most manufacturers provide snap warranties on their diapers.

The Judges Scorecard: According to our scorecard we'd recommend you choose snap closures whenever possible. You might even have noticed that companies who used to exclusively produce velcro closure systems are now also offering their diapers in a snap closure. This further proves that snaps are the bees knees! Whoop Whoop!

Knickernappies Retailer of the Week! Inspired by Baby/Custom Knickernappies

We are pleased to announce this week's Featured Retailer is Caye of Inspired by Baby /Knickernappies on Hyena Cart located in Eugene, Oregon!
Tell us a little about yourself and your family and how your business came to be-It is kinda funny how I met Heather and got invited into the Knickernappies family. In 2006, I was pregnant with my first daughter and doing some internet research on cloth diapering. I came across Heather's website www.clothdiaperoutlet.com and saw a help wanted link on her home page so I emailed her. I had been sewing clothes and things for myself for several years and wondered if I could sew diapers.

Come to find out she lived only a couple miles from me in Eugene,Oregon so I went to meet her one day. She showed me how to sew a diaper and gave me the pattern and some fabrics to practice making some. She like what I did, and I have been sewing custom Knickernappies ever since. Heather owns the Hyena cart store but wasn't using it, so she lets me run it to sell the customs as well as my own creations under the label "Inspired by Baby". I make minkee topped changing pads, wetbags, wipes, play block, and baby blankets. I sell some of these items in a baby boutique here in Eugene as well as the custom diapers. After my daughter was born, I also worked for Heather packing orders for her retail diaper business. Our daughters have grown up together and become playmates and we have all become like family. She has taught me everything I know about cloth diapers and has helped me through so many tough parenting moments by sharing with me her own experiences. If I have a question about cloth diapers or how to handle a 2 yr old temper tantrum, I ask Heather. She is a wealth of information and always willing to help us out. We now have a 9 month old daughter, Josie, and look forward to her playing with Heather's new baby.

My husband is an English teacher at OSU in Corvallis, Oregon and also writes fiction short stories. He was a little leary about using cloth diapers in the beginning, but we learned how to do it together and now he loves the aspect of saving money and the environment however we can. My two year old loves picking out which diaper she wants to wear (and it usually has pink in it somewhere!).

Heather has used a couple photos on her website of Sabrina, my two year old, wearing KND's when she was a newborn. When Sabrina was 9 months old, Heather wanted a photo of a baby wearing her diaper for a pamphlet, so we took some of Sabrina and she used one of them. It was so exciting to see our baby in print!

What do you like best about being in the cloth diaper industry? What I love about cloth diapering is that I can mix my love of colors and patterns with a practical application, not to mention that sewing allows me to get away from the stress of parenting and be an artist for a little while. I also love the fact that there is a resale market for cloth diapers which allows us to sell some of our older diapers and get new ones. I have met some great women buying, selling, and trading new and used diapers that I wouldn't have met otherwise.

What are your favorite Knickernappies products and why? My favorite Knickernappies product (besides the diapers of course!) is the Fluff Dust. What a simple product that helps so much with a smelly diaper pail. I love the Satsuma Twist scent the best because it has a nice, clean citrus smell. I also love her LoopyDo and SuperDo inserts. They are so absorbent and a great add on sale for my diapers!

Of all your Custom KN Diapers, what are your favorite color/print combos? Two of the most popular custom combos I have done over the years is a red PUL outer with a cow print suede cloth inner and black and white snaps, and a pink PUL outer with a dalmatian suede cloth inner and black and white snaps. I love the contrast of the colors and it also looks great in the new One Size KND. I love anything with an animal print whether it be in minkee or PUL, on the outside or inside of the diaper. They are fun and gender neutral.

Eligible photos must be uploaded to the Fan Photos between April 15 through May 15. If you already have a Fan Photo uploaded that you'd like to use as your entry then you need to upload it again so that it will have the proper date and also a link to the retailer.

If your photo does not include a link to a Knickernappies Retailer in the comments it will be deleted and you will have to resubmit . If you don't know the store name or didn't get the diaper new just say so.

How do you get votes? Every time someone "LIKES" your photo it is a vote. When the contest ends the photo with the most "LIKES" is the winner. Comments are encouraged as well but do not count as votes.

How do I promote my photo? We've provided a handy "Vote for Me" button on the left hand column of the Blog. Tell us a little about yourself and your family-I am a WAHM with a 2-1/2 year old daughter. We live in Munster, Indiana which is about 30 miles southeast of Chicago. My daughter is in cloth diapers full time.

How'd you get started cloth diapering and what made you decide to open your own business? A friend of mine was using cloth on her little girl. Since I tried EVERY disposable on the market and Savannah was having rashes and reactions I thought why not! They are so cute! I fell in love with cloth diapers. OK so I am addicted to them! LOL I decided since there wasn't any cloth diaper stores in the area, I wanted to be the first one!

What do you like best about being in the cloth diaper industry? I like being green! I think that is a very important part of helping the Earth for our children. Everyone that I have met through cloth diapers is so nice! I really like educating mamas about cloth diapers. I have in home consultations and I also do cloth diaper parties as well.

What are your favorite Knickernappies products and why? I really like the One Size diaper with the loopy do inserts! The Loopy do Inserts are awesome! So trim yet so absorbant. I also really like the Super Do that is what we use at nighttime!

Diaper Sprayers (Part 2) - Tips & Tricks for use

In Part 1 we covered the basics of why it benefits you to have and use a diaper sprayer, ease of use, installation and more. Now we'll cover some of the recommended tips and tricks for using a diaper sprayer that will help you cloth diaper like a pro!

Tip 1 Make sure to turn the shut off valve after each use. This prevents curious toddlers and others from testing out the sprayer and hosing down your bathroom.

Tip 2 Lift the seat first before you get started!

Tip 3 Adjust the spray to your preference before each use. Michelle of Cloth Diapers Made Simple recommends a test spray into the toilet first so that you'll get a sense of how and where it will spray. This will greatly reduce accidental overspray.

Tip 4 Hold the diaper down into the toilet as much as you can and spray downwards.

Tip 5 Wring out the diaper into the toilet using the exterior of the diaper, if possible. Andrea's article, The Art of Diaper Spraying, gives a great example. If you were to spray a prefold you would then use the cover to wring out the prefold into the toilet by rolling it in the diaper/cover.

Tip 6 Keep a diaper pail or wetbag near the toilet to help you transport your sprayed diapers to your main pail, if it is not already located in the bathroom. This helps prevent dripping everywhere!

Tip 7 Install the sprayer in your laundry room! Bayla of Soft and Cozy Baby Blog suggests you look for alternative places to install the sprayer if you're uncomfortable with the idea of it being at the toilet. Some moms have successfully installed their sprayer at their utility sink or at the washing machine in their laundry room.

Diaper Sprayers (Part 1) - Are they a must have?

I'm sure you've heard about Diaper Sprayers and how all who use them swear by them. But are they a necessity or a luxury? Can you successfully cloth diaper without one? Let's go over the benefits of using one.
They're easy to install-The Knickernappies Sprayer kit comes fully assembled and all you have to do is use the included hardware to attach to your toilets water valve.

They help keep your diapers cleaner-Essentially the cleaner your diapers are when they go into the washer, the cleaner they'll come out and the easier they'll be to launder.

They help prevent stains from setting in-We all know that sometimes, no matter how often you wash, stains can appear and be a pain to remove. Rinsing your diapers before putting them in your pail will help keep stains from drying and setting in.

Washing your diapers is much easier when you've used a sprayer-Using a sprayer to treat your soiled diapers before placing them in your diaper pail or washing machine reduces the amount of waste that needs to rinse from your diapers before washing. This could reduce the need for additional unnecessary rinse cycles.

Using a sprayer helps reduce the odor-This one's a no-brainer! Compare the odor of soiled diapers with waste still attached, to diapers that have been sprayed/rinsed into the toilet and it's easy to imagine which would smell better. Well maybe "better" isn't the right term, how about smell "less." LOL

Can you cloth diaper successfully without a sprayer? Yes you can. However diaper sprayers make cloth diapering much easier and really help eliminate many of the issues that may arise with regards to laundering you diapers. Not to mention they help cut back on electricity use and unnecessary wear and tear on your diapers and washing machine due to over washing.

How was the overall review of product, fit, features, ease of use, how you like this product compared to other brands-The diaper is quite big, it prevents leakage, and it can be used longer than others brand and the microfleece inner is so soft. It's safe for my baby's skin.

It's easy to wear on my baby, because of the side snap. The LoopyDo insert, so so highly recommended. My baby is so heavy wetter. I usually put a disposable diaper on him during the night until I found Knickernappies one size with Loopydo insert, my baby could wear it all night long without leak at all. There are some brands from US which when worn by my baby is always leaking, even within 3 hours only during the day.

What's your favorite feature? The big size diaper and loopydo insert. I loooove it! ;D

Would you recommend this product to others? I have a small online baby shop. I sell some local cloth diaper products. But for night time use, mostly I recommend Knickernappies
with LoopyDo insert to my customers.

I started to cloth diaper Camryn when she was 15 months old (she's been potty trained for about a year now) and Alexis is cloth diapered too.

How'd you get started cloth diapering and what made you decide to open your own business?I had read a lot about cloth diapering online. I never thought that I would cloth diaper because I always pictured burp cloths and pins. But then I saw what cloth diapers looked like today and I was immediately hooked! I started Camryn when she was 15 months old. I was so excited when I was pregnant with Alexis - I was anxious to be able to cloth diaper her! I wanted to start my own business because I saw a need to educate people on cloth diapering. I think if more people knew what it is like to cloth diaper, they would make the switch. A lot of people think prefolds and pins but there are so many more options out there. That's the second reason I wanted to start my own business - there are so many options that it can be overwhelming. I wanted to be able to show people what is out there and help them decide what is best for them.

What do you like best about being in the cloth diaper industry? I absolutely love answering customers questions - whether it's about what diaper to choose, how to care for their diapers or anything in between.
