Outside of my comfort zone never felt so comfortable! Have you tried the Diva Cup?

I'll admit it, I'm a cloth diaper fanatic but I don't use mama cloth.  I love mama cloth and I do promote it but I've always been a tampon using kind of gal and just could never see any reason to use anything else.  From the women I talk to it usually seems that there are either a lot of women who prefer pads or women who never use pads.  I don't recall too many who use a variety of methods.  That's something I will try and teach my daughter early on, there are options and you should try them all in order to find out what you like best.

So not that long ago I was introduced to the concept of the Diva Cup.  I thought it was a little out there and couldn't imagine how it could possibly hold enough.  I mean I have never actually measured just how much a cup would need to hold but the Diva Cup sure looked tiny and I couldn't imagine having to change it and rinse it frequently throughout the day.

Second, I wondered just how comfortable could this little thing be?  So I suppose you could just say I was a skeptic, I thought there's no way it could be as convenient as it sounds.

Then I decided to give it a try.

I ordered a Size 2 and when it arrived I excitedly showed my husband what I was going to try and what it looked like.  He had no idea what I was talking about or what I was showing him.  But I explained and when he heard that it was going to save us money he jumped right on board the Diva train!
So how did I like it?

I read somewhere that it was easiest to insert in the shower so that's where I first tried.  I discovered that for me it was easiest to do while squatting, this could be an issue if I were to be in a public restroom, etc. but it's not to say that I couldn't or that you couldn't use it any other way, that's just the way I prefer.

I was surprised that you really don't place it very far up, when you think that you'd still be able to feel it you actually can't.  I'd say that it would take about one full cycle to get your method down from how to insert it and when you'll need to check it.

Personally, on the first and second day of my cycle I check it/rinse it every six hours, except over night.  After day two I can go 12 hours which is way more convenient than using tampons in my opinion.

I never dreamed that I would like it so much and be a total convert after just one cycle but I was!  Now I tell everyone about it and even by them as gifts for other women in my family just so they'll give it a try too.

So lets crunch some numbers, that's approximately 15 tampons per cycle, 12 cycles a year, since age 13.  That's about 3600 tampons later that I finally tried another option and I'm not going back any time soon.

I love that I no longer have to panic when I start my cycle and realize that I don't have any tampons.  My husband loves that I no longer have to send him to the drugstore on a tampon run.

I'm also very excited to have made another step in the right direction towards reducing our families waste and saving us money as well.  I don't even want to think about my daughter getting old enough to start her period but now I know that I want to show her all the choices available to her.  I hope I can teach her to skip the disposable options all together and go straight to mama cloth and the Diva Cup when she's ready.

Do you use the Diva Cup?  Been thinking of trying it?  We'd love to hear if it worked for you.

If you're thinking of purchasing one, visit one of our fine Knickernappies retailers where you will find that many of them carry it in their stores.

Heavy bleeder here, so I was very skeptic at first. However, in October, I was shopping at the local co-op and in need of tampons -- I think I literally had none left and had just gotten AF that day. I picked up a box of natural tampons, thinking I should at least switch to those, and then I picked up the Diva Cup. My mommy friends online raved about it, so I decided to try it. I do have to change it every 3 - 4 hours on the first three days -- I dump it when it's half full, simply because I have heard if you let it get to the brim, your muscles actually squeeze it more, so you are more likely to have leaks. I have used it for 2 cycles, and then bam -- I found out I was pregnant, but I do love the Diva Cup!

I love love love my diva cup! In fact, I loved it so much I wrote about it here: http://www.dirtydishonline.com/2007/03/why-i-love-my-diva-cup-amy-gusefski.html

I love so many things about it, from ease of use, not feeling it at all, to not constantly having to buy products and then discard them.

I haven't bought tampons in 5 years. After the birth of my first child, tampons just didn't fit so I switched to the Diva Cup. Loved it so much that I'll never go back. Especially for vacations, it's so nice to just pack a neat little cup instead of a box of tampons and a pack of pantiliners.

I once had an internal exam by my OBGYN with my cup in place. She thought it was so cool and now she uses one too!
